Mel Smilow for Smilow-Thielle Walnut Rail-Back Sofa Frame

An expansive walnut sofa frame with the architectural rhythm of an open rail back, angled arms and a floating seating platform. The long horizontal frame and tapered legs give the design a light profile, while the warm walnut grain brings depth to its spare structure.

Designed by Mel Smilow for Smilow-Thielle, circa the 1950s, with a surviving manufacturer’s mark. The original steel spring suspension remains in place. At 95 inches wide, the frame has substantial presence from the front and a finished sculptural profile from behind.

Offered without cushions. This is a sofa frame requiring separately commissioned seat and back cushions before use as a furnished sofa. One frame is included.

Condition

Good vintage condition consistent with age and use.
The walnut frame presents beautifully with a warm, even patina developed over decades. Minor scratches, surface wear, and finish imperfections are present throughout, primarily to portions of the arms and upper rails, consistent with age and normal use.
The original spring steel suspension system remains intact and functional. Offered as shown without cushions, allowing for complete customization by the next owner.
Manufacturer's marking remains visible.

Style Notes

The exposed walnut structure suits an interior where furniture is seen from several directions. Custom cushions can establish the color and texture while leaving the rail back and sculpted arms visible.
